Recorded Earthquakes
The vast majority of recordings has been triggered by local events at a building site nearby. So far, our seismograph has recorded following earthquakes, that could be felt in our area:
Earthquake December 29th 2020, Croatia (Sisak, Magnitude 6.1)
Earthquake May 20th 2012, Northern Italy (22 miles N Bologna, Magnitude 5.9)
Earthquake April 17th, 2008, Bad Reichenhall
Earthquake December 5th, 2004, border area Germany, Switzerland and France
Earthquake Juli 12th, 2004, Slovenia
Earthquake July 17th, 2001, Italy
In addition, our seismograph has recorded following earthquakes, that could not be felt in our area:
Earthquake October 30th, 2016, Norcia/central Italy (115 km NE Rome, Magnitude 6.6)
Earthquake August 24th, 2016, Norcia/central Italy (106 km NE Rome, Magnitude 6.1)
Earthquake January 8th, 2006, Crete (95 km NNW Chania, Magnitude 6.9)
Earthquake October 8th, 2005, Pakistan (60 miles NNE Islamabad, Magnitude 7.6)
Earthquake May 3rd, 2005, Austria (Roppen near Imst in Tirol, Magnitude 3.0)
Erdbeben vom 26. Dezember 2004, Sumatra, Indonesia ( Magnitude 9.0, seismic waves hardly distinguishable from background noise)
Earthquake December 23th, 2004, Antarctica (Magnitude 8.1)
Description of the seismograph
Our seismometer is based on the Quake Data Recorder by Kinemetrics (previously known as "Earthscope"), which reliably registers local vibrations of the magnitude 1.5 to 4 (Richter Scale) as well as remote earthquakes of magnitudes 4.3 and above in a distance of 250 nautical miles.
We use a self developed software to display the current data on the Web in real time. The last 24 hours are recorded and displayed on the drum (earlier data are overwritten), stronger "shockwaves" are recorded separately and permanently in so called "events". Per day the system records and analyses 44MB of data.
On remote earthquakes we manually mark the arrival of so called p-waves and s-waves (compressional and shear waves). With those markers the analysis software can compute the distance of the epicenter and further the magnitude of the earthquake in the epicenter from the local magnitude. Obviously this computation is not as precise as the scientific methodes, as local conditions like surface conditions, mountains (as in our area around Salzburg) and similiar can offset precision of the calculation.
More information about earthquakes can be found on the US government sites.
Our biggest motivation to introduce the seismometer however was not monitoring earthquakes, but to record local vibrations of the building, as we currently have two large buildings sites around us and people within the apartment block reported continuous nuisance by vibrations. Needless to say, that the companies on those building sites were not amused about our seismograph.
